Support Groups for Parents: Helping Your Child Navigate Mental Health

Early intervention is vital when a child struggles with mental health. We’ve proven that parents and carers can play a central role supporting a child or teen through these challenging times – our Parent Support groups will show you how.

Are you the parent or carer of a child or young person struggling with their mental health? You’re not alone.

Did you know that 20% of young people experience a mental health crisis in any given year? Or that 50% of mental health problems are established by the age of 14? It’s common in the UK for young people to wait 12+ months for a CAMHs initial assessment for mental health problems, and demand on the service means only the most serious cases are accepted.

What to Expect?

Our support groups are relaxed, informal and parent-led, drawing on lived experience to create an informative, supportive and understanding environment. Sessions are 1.5 hours long and hosted either in-person or via Zoom. They’re led by a parent with lived experience of supporting a child struggling with mental health alongside an experienced mental health professional.

Our sessions focus on three key areas:

  1.  Psychoeducation & Skills Training:
We’ll help you better understand your child and give you proven and effective strategies to support their mental health and recovery.
  2. Parental Self-Care:
Taking care of your own mental and emotional health is key for effectively supporting your child. We’ll explain how your child benefits from a strong, stable parent, confident that they have a bright future ahead of them. We’ll lead you through simple and fun ways to improve your positivity, mental and emotional wellbeing and show you how this directly supports your child’s recovery.
  3. Peer Support
Some of the best help comes from parents walking a similar path who understand what you’re going through. In our groups, parents and carers connect, share their stories, and lift each other up as they see progress in their kids during our program. It’s a place where you’ll find understanding, support, and no judgement.
